Rest Awhile

It is a warm, and sleepy kind of evening. The thick overhang of clouds has dissipated leaving a simple, hazy summer night. My hair is hanging in wet clumps from my shower, and errant strands drop glistening bits of water next to my old laptop as my fingertips clatter away anxiously across the keyboard. The air conditioner is humming away serenely as if completing its final task before heaving a delicious sigh, and turning in for the night.

Everything tonight is lending itself to rest. Every creature, and object around me is preparing for the night. Rest, is there any more delicious word? This past weekend, Warrior Man, Uncle, and Aunt and I headed to the mountains on a warm Saturday to take a picnic. The day was a surprise, and a delight–and rested my heart in ways that it has not felt quietness for a long time. In this modern world I feel my thoughts whirl faster, and faster–and so often I forget to take time to calm down, smell the pine trees, listen to the rushing creek so whimsically named “Little Goose Creek”, and simply rest. Rest. Rest.

Here are some pictures from the day, and a poem by Lucy Maud Montgomery {the author of “Anne of Green Gables”, and one of my favorite writers}.

May you find a way to rest in the upcoming days.

Rest Awhile by Lucy Maud Montgomery

“Come, rest awhile, and let us idly stray
In glimmering valleys, cool and far away.

mtn3

Come from the greedy mart, the troubled street,
And listen to the music, faint and sweet

mtn11
That echoes ever to a listening ear,
Unheard by those who will not pause to hear

mtn2

One step aside and dewy buds unclose
The sweetness of the violet and the rose; mtn9
Song and romance still linger in the green,
Emblossomed ways by you so seldom seen,
mtn8

And near at hand, would you but see them, lie
All lovely things beloved in days gone by.

mtn11

You have forgotten what it is to smile
In your too busy life, come, rest awhile.”

What are some ways that you rest, and relax when life seems to be spinning faster, and faster? I would love to hear about it! Leave a comment. Or two!

  1. Hmm it looks like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I
guess I’ll just sum it up what I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your
blog. I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new
to the whole thing. Do you have any recommendations for rookie blog writers?
    I’d really appreciate it.

    1. Hello there! I would just say write a lot! Write about things that you know, and just focus on developing your own writing style. Get into a few blogging groups, and encourage other people as well. That is the best way to get your blog going. Good luck!

    1. Glad you liked it, Mom! You need to take a rest as well, sometimes. Let Amalia talk you into watching a show, and eating a bowl of ice cream. 😉 Hope your day is going well!

    1. Glad you enjoyed it, Maggi! I hope it helps you to make that decision to go for a hike! It is just so good for us to get out, and explore sometimes. Hope you have a fabulous week!

    1. Thanks, Grandpa! I do try to live in that poem, but it is so hard somedays, isn’t it? I love that poetry, and L.M.Montgomery’s writing. Hope you are doing well! See you next month!

    1. It is good to rest a bit before heading into the day, isn’t it Carol? Hope it helped you have a day that focused on the peace rather than the chaos. Thanks for the sweet comment!
